Spry Farms Honey Bees Debut

In 2024, Scott began to immerse himself in all things honey bee. He has consumed many hours of instructional video, attended a half-dozen local beekeeper meetings, prepared our yard and assembled hives. The bees arrived in early April 2025, the same week as our first grandchild! The day after he placed the packaged bees that arrived by USPS, it snowed. Of course it snowed, it’s Michigan. All Michiganders know that this is not unusual.

He has “babied” these bees but he is also no helicopter parent. He goes into the hive only when he is certain he needs to, otherwise, he has let nature take its course. This endeavor, like so many other adventures, is a work in progress. He hopes to see his hives through mites and Michigan winters, but only time will tell. He is absorbing and translating oodles of beekeeper wisdom from experts, friends and acquaintances.

So far, Buck our Brittany has only been stung once. His run line sits alongside the area where the bees reside. We think he will quickly learn to respect their space.

Scott would love to bless family and friends with liquid gold from the hive. He expects it may take a couple seasons to get to a decent production level where the bees can spare some of their winter stores.

I am in awe as I’ve learned a bit about the secret life of bees. For example, bees can travel up to 10 miles a day; they learn who their keeper is and generally regard her/him as friend not foe. And even though they only live around three months, they transmit this knowledge to successive generations. Hive-building and queen-tending, the list of amazing bee behavior goes on and on! Check out this really cool video for the inside scoop on honeybee behavior.

The fear of the Lord is pure,

enduring forever.

The decrees of the Lord are firm,

and all of them are righteous.

They are more precious than gold,

than much pure gold;

they are sweeter than honey,

than honey from the honeycomb.

- Psalm 19:9-10
